Live - City Beach

Sustainable Coastal Living

Our Client wanted to retire to a passively designed sustainable and intensely private home by the beach that let him grow vegies in the yard, pluck grapes from the deck pergola and enjoy the sunshine when he wasn't on the sand or in the water.

The house was designed in two main wings around a central courtyard and deck with a separate master bedroom suite to allow privacy between family, visitors and future carers as required.

The elevated timber structure was carefully sited to block the harsh summer sun and let the winter warmth in with generous overhangs and carefully located windows all around to ensure privacy and outlook in a very open plan home.

The light weight structure is heavily insulated with high ceilings, natural breeze paths and thermal circulation from high and low level windows to allow control of the internal temperature without air conditioning all year round.

Materials included sustainable sourced timber cladding designed to age in place, local limestone blockwork and high grade metal claddings for longevity on the coast.

Solar PV and battery systems, grey water recycling and water storage were all integral to the touching the earth lightly design intent.

One of our favourite homes for its simplicity and vision in contrast to some of its City Beach neighbours.
